Returning from his trip to Morocco in 1832, Delacroix made a stopover of less than two days in Algers. This brief stopover was enough to ignite his imagination and inspire Femmes d'Alger in their apartment. Inseparable from the path traveled by the artist since his beginnings, this painting, produced from a "rich harvest of studies and motifs", constitutes a first outcome.
We find mixed together several elements of his previous language, the revelations feverishly noted since his arrival in Morocco, the first thoughts born from his discoveries and the various preparatory stages in the workshop.
It also opens new perspectives for its author and for the history of painting and demonstrates that a genre subject, a so-called local subject, or even a so-called noble subject can make a difference if there is originality on the part of the painter. The oriental subject in general and women in the seraglio in particular have inspired painters, poets, ancient and contemporary, musicians, and are found at the heart of Delacroix's aesthetic and technical references.
Later, like him, painters belonging to the Fauvist, Cubist and Purist movements would find themselves in this composition, while others would make it a reference work. The painting alone corroborates Delacroix's prediction in 1832 that, in Morocco, there is still work for twenty generations of painters.
