This richly illustrated 78-card deck artfully depicts traditional Tarot symbolism with classically costumed Japanese characters. The unique Japanese genre Ukiyoe reflects Buddhist ideas about the transience of the physical world.
The Japanese artist Koji Furuta masterfully captures the serene beauty of the “floating world” with scenes from everyday Japanese life. The Major Arcana depict well-known archetypal figures such as a Kabuki actor as a magician and a Buddhist monk as a hierophant (The hierophant or hierophant is the leader of the mystery cult and the most important priest in Greek religious culture).
The artist chose ancient Japanese symbols for minors: traditional swords, ceremonial scepters, lacquered cup bowls and coins from the Edo era.
The 78 sheets are numbered and titled in both English and Japanese. Artist Koji Furuta was personally selected by tarot guru Stuart Kaplan to combine the world of Japanese ukiyoe artwork with the traditional 78-card tarot deck.
The resulting images capture the delicate yet powerful ukiyoe style, while the final product is strikingly modern. On the other hand, this has always been the strength of Japanese art throughout the centuries. Ukiyoe is a perfect medium to convey the ancient wisdom of the Tarot. The magician, like a samurai, is ready for action. The High Priestess peeks out from behind her elaborate makeup and costume to let her callers know that their word is law. The hierophant looks sadly at his questioning students. Justice looks over her shoulder to make sure no one is left behind. And a bodhisattva waves from a celestial lotus as tombstones fall in judgment.
